In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they
may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
From time to time, here at B the light, we’ll be highlighting individuals who we believe exemplify Matthew 5:16, and are helping others SHINE BRIGHT in the process. In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I decided to catch up with Nashville native, Cynthia Tidwell-Jackson, stylist and owner of Pink Glitter, a thrift boutique dedicating to raising Breast Cancer Awareness. At Pink Glitter, every purchase has a purpose; proceeds go towards wigs, headwraps, and care packages for women undergoing chemotherapy and radiation.
After graduating from Tennessee State University with an accounting degree, Cynthia quickly realized that sitting behind a desk was not going to satisfy her desire to inspire, uplift, and find beauty in things. Over time, she began to ask God what she could do to allow all of her passions to come forth-- beauty, thrifting, and speaking. While serving as a Look Good, Feel Better facilitator with the American Cancer Society, Cynthia saw a need present for African American women. After having an irregular breast exam (puckering and dimpling) at the age of 33, losing a friend to breast cancer, and watching numerous family members transition as a result of various forms of cancer, Cynthia embarked upon this Pink Glitter journey in 2016. It was a perfect way for her to style hair, be creative, and be herself, while impacting the lives of others.
To date, Pink Glitter has grown by word of mouth. Cynthia calls Pink Glitter a leap of faith venture, and though she has lost people along the way, credits God for providing everything she has needed exactly when it has been needed. Cynthia said she helps others shine bright by adding glitter to their lives! To her, glitter is anything that makes the day or situation better. For her clients, this may mean hair care, meditation practices, community resources, a listening ear, or a boost in self-esteem. Cynthia shared candidly, and with tears about a former client, Ms. Lisa, who has now passed away. Pink Glitter was the space where Ms. Lisa gained freedom from life concerns after her diagnosis; matters such as weight gain and an unsupportive spouse. Cynthia shared that whatever was going on in her world didn’t matter when it came time to sprinkle glitter for Ms. Lisa. Over time, this and other accounts have provided Cynthia with peace and confirmation that she’s on the right path.
At this time, Cynthia is looking to partner with individuals in the Nashville community. She’s currently running a one-woman-show and could use volunteers for fundraising, event planning, research, and assembling care packages. As always, community members can donate gently used clothing items as well as care package items such as adult coloring books, spiritual books, crossword puzzles, herbal cough drops, lip balm, slippers, water bottles, and cosmetic bags.
To connect directly with Cynthia, she can be reached via Facebook and by phone at (615) 977.7115. Pink Glitter is located at 3854 Dickerson Road, Suite C. In the near future, Pink Glitter will be hosting BOOZ & BRA parties (think sip & paint) where ladies can gather to bling out their bras! Cynthia currently partners with Nashville General Hospital in order to serve newly diagnosed chemotherapy patients.
